Austin’s drone scene is young, technical and growing fast. Rather than one dominant employer, the city has a spread of start-ups: builders of long-range cargo drones hiring reliability, systems and mechanical engineers; counter-UAS and air-defence companies hiring radar, DSP, optomechanical and computer vision specialists; and autonomy software teams looking for robotics, tactical communications and field systems engineers. Overseas defence-tech firms have started to use the city as a US engineering base too.
That variety makes Austin a good market for engineers who want breadth. Alongside the hardware and software roles there are federal sales and solutions engineering positions, programme management for counter-drone contracts, and internship intakes in computer vision and electrical engineering. For pilots, the opportunities are narrower but real: utility UAS inspection, geospatial and survey project work, and construction field technology, all under Part 107.

## **Questions, answered **
- **What drone jobs are common in Austin?**
- Engineering at start-ups: systems, reliability, mechanical and mechatronics, electrical harness, radar and DSP, computer vision and machine learning, robotics and autonomy software, plus field service and solutions engineering roles that support customers in the field.
- **Why are defence drone companies setting up in Austin?**
- Its software talent pool and the Army’s modernisation presence in the city have drawn cargo-UAS, counter-drone and autonomy start-ups, and at least one European defence-tech firm now runs its US engineering office from the city.
- **Are there drone pilot jobs in Austin?**
- A few. Utility and river-authority UAS pilot roles, geospatial and survey project work and construction field technology positions appear, all of which need a Part 107 certificate. Round Rock adds UAS maintenance technician openings.
- **Are Austin drone jobs open to new graduates?**
- Yes. Some of the start-ups run software, electrical and computer vision internship intakes, and the smaller teams tend to give early-career engineers broad responsibility quickly.
