The Role

The Senior Explosive Safety Specialist provides technical expertise and operational leadership for activities involving explosives, ammunition, energetic materials, warheads, fuzing systems, and munitions.

In addition to serving as an experienced explosive safety practitioner, this role supports the planning and execution of complex domestic and international field operations, live-fire testing, flight testing, demonstrations, and deployments. The Senior Explosive Safety Specialist is expected to independently lead deployment operations associated with assigned programs while maintaining sufficient working knowledge of aviation/range operations and regulated transportation requirements to support broader field activities.

This role works closely with engineering, flight operations, test, manufacturing, logistics, safety, and program teams to safely and effectively execute energetic and field operations.

Key Responsibilities

Explosive Safety & Energetic Operations

Apply explosive safety requirements to the handling, transportation, storage, integration, testing, and use of ammunition, explosives, energetic materials, warheads, fuzes, and munitions.
Independently support and oversee complex explosive and energetic operations.
Identify explosive hazards and develop practical risk controls for field, test, integration, and storage activities.
Provide explosive safety guidance to engineering, test, manufacturing, flight operations, and field teams.
Support ammunition and explosives handling, inventory accountability, magazine management, and storage operations.
Support warhead, munition, fuze, and energetic component installation and integration activities.
Support operations involving Electronic Safe and Arm Devices (ESADs), fuzing systems, initiation systems, and other safety-critical energetic components.

Test & Deployment Operations

Plan and execute logistics for complex domestic and international field operations, live-fire tests, flight tests, demonstrations, and deployments.
Develop deployment plans covering personnel, equipment, energetic materials, transportation, facilities, schedules, site access, vendors, and operational resources.
Lead pre-deployment readiness activities and ensure required equipment, documentation, transportation, access, and support resources are in place.
Coordinate mobilization, field execution, demobilization, equipment recovery, and operational closeout.
Develop and maintain deployment checklists, manifests, movement plans, schedules, and operational documentation.
Anticipate logistical and operational constraints and develop mitigation and contingency plans.
Resolve field logistics and operational issues in real time with limited supervision.
Coordinate vendors, transportation providers, facilities, procurement, and other external operational resources.
Lead or support post-deployment reviews and incorporate lessons learned into future operations.

Range, Live-Fire & Test Support

Provide explosive safety and operational support for live-fire ranges and energetic test activities.
Coordinate range preparation, access, resources, explosive safety requirements, munition accountability, and post-test reconciliation.
Work with range personnel, engineers, flight operations, and test teams to enable safe execution of field activities.
Support activities involving unexploded, damaged, or potentially hazardous energetic test articles.

Shipping & Regulatory Support

Support domestic and international movement of energetic materials, test hardware, and operational equipment.
Maintain working awareness of hazardous materials, Dangerous Goods, ITAR, EAR, customs, and international transportation requirements affecting deployments.
Recognize activities requiring specialized regulatory review and coordinate with the appropriate compliance or logistics subject matter expert.
Support required shipping, inventory, customs, and equipment-movement documentation.

Aviation & Range Coordination

Maintain working knowledge of aviation terminology, range operations, airspace considerations, and UAS flight-test requirements.
Support range scheduling, site coordination, access requirements, NOTAM coordination, and operational documentation.
Recognize activities requiring specialized FAA, airspace, or aviation regulatory support and coordinate with the appropriate subject matter expert.

Hazard Classification, Demilitarization & Disposal

Support explosive hazard classification activities for ammunition, energetic components, warheads, and munitions.
Coordinate demilitarization, disposition, and disposal activities with appropriate internal and external organizations.
Maintain required accountability and disposition documentation.

Weapon & Fuze Safety Reviews

Support preparation of technical information and documentation for explosive, weapon, and fuze safety reviews.
Support programs interacting with applicable Service/component review authorities, including WSESRB, NNMSB, AWSSRB, AFSRB, or equivalent organizations.
Assist engineering and program teams in addressing safety review questions, findings, and corrective actions.

Process & Team Development

Develop and improve explosive safety, deployment, and field operations procedures, checklists, and standard work.
Provide technical and operational guidance to less experienced personnel.
Identify recurring operational constraints and recommend process, resource, equipment, or infrastructure improvements.

Required Qualifications

Significant experience in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), explosive safety, ammunition and explosives operations, military ordnance, energetic systems, or a closely related discipline.
Demonstrated knowledge of explosive safety principles, ammunition and explosives handling, and energetic operations.
Experience supporting live-fire ranges, explosive testing, ordnance operations, weapons integration, or comparable energetic activities.
Demonstrated experience independently planning and executing field operations, deployments, test activities, or comparable military operations.
Experience coordinating personnel, equipment, transportation, schedules, facilities, and operational resources.
Ability to integrate explosive safety requirements into field and deployment planning.
Experience with ammunition storage, explosive magazines, and energetic inventory accountability.
Ability to identify operational, logistical, and regulatory risks and determine when specialized subject matter expertise is required.
Strong technical writing, operational planning, communication, and documentation skills.
Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally and support field activities as required.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduate of a military EOD school or equivalent formal explosives/ordnance training.
Experience supporting UAS, aerospace, defense, developmental weapons, warheads, munitions, fuzing systems, or energetic systems.
Experience planning and executing remote, austere, multi-site, or international deployments.
Experience with Electronic Safe and Arm Devices (ESADs), fuzing systems, or safety-critical initiation systems.
Experience supporting WSESRB, NNMSB, AWSSRB, AFSRB, or equivalent government weapon/fuze safety reviews.
Familiarity with HAZMAT and Dangerous Goods transportation requirements, including 49 CFR and/or IATA.
Familiarity with ITAR, EAR, customs, or international shipping requirements.
Familiarity with FAA regulations, airspace coordination, NOTAMs, Certificates of Waiver or Authorization, or range operations.
FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate or experience supporting UAS flight operations.
Experience coordinating explosive demilitarization and disposal activities.
Active or previously held U.S. security clearance

Pay Range

$90,000—$140,000 USD
