As a Senior Imaging Software Engineer at Axon, you will architect and develop the software pipelines that process, transform, and deliver video across a range of products including body cameras, dash cameras, drones, and future imaging platforms. You will work primarily at the camera middleware and video pipeline layer, bridging the underlying camera platform with image processing, encoding, streaming, computer vision, and application-level consumers. You will collaborate closely with engineers working on camera firmware, sensor integration, image quality, computational photography, and product applications. The role is based in Tampere and follows a hybrid schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and develop camera middleware and real-time video pipeline components across Axon products.
  • Build high-performance multimedia pipelines using GStreamer and platform-specific media frameworks.
  • Integrate image processing, computer vision, and ML algorithms into production camera pipelines.
  • Optimize pipelines for latency, throughput, memory bandwidth, power, and stability.
  • Collaborate with Camera HAL, firmware, image processing, and hardware teams on interfaces and system integration.
  • Debug complex issues across middleware, camera frameworks, drivers, and hardware.
  • Provide technical leadership through architecture reviews, code reviews, mentoring, and cross-team technical decisions.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, primarily in C/C++.
  • Strong experience with camera, video, multimedia, or high-throughput processing pipelines on Linux or embedded platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with GStreamer or comparable multimedia frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of buffer management, zero-copy architectures, synchronization, multithreading, and real-time performance.
  • Strong software architecture and cross-team collaboration skills, with the ability to apply modern AI-assisted and automated development workflows to embedded software development, debugging, and validation.
  • Experience integrating image-processing or computer-vision components into production systems.
  • Ability to debug across application, middleware, platform camera frameworks, and hardware interfaces.
  • Familiarity with embedded Linux development; experience with Yocto is beneficial.
  • Strong software architecture, communication, and cross-team collaboration skills.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Qualcomm camera platforms, Camera HAL, or CamX.
  • Experience with robotics and ROS2 System Bus or equivalent inter-process communication protocols.
  • Knowledge of H.264/H.265 codecs and hardware-accelerated video pipelines.
  • Experience with camera ISP pipelines, image quality, or camera tuning.
  • Experience with computer vision or ML-based imaging systems.
  • Experience of designing and implementing image processing, CV and ML algorithms.
  • Familiarity with Android camera or multimedia frameworks.
  • Experience with Rust, Go, Python, test automation, or camera-system simulation.
  • Any background in photography, cinematography, colour grading and related areas are useful.
