What employers mean when they ask for Part 107

Part 107 is the FAA rule that governs commercial flying with small drones, and the remote pilot certificate that comes with it is what turns a hobby pilot into someone a company can legally put in the air. That is why it shows up in so many US drone job postings, from drone pilot jobs in inspection, mapping and agriculture to delivery operations, public safety programmes and field service roles at manufacturers. For many employers it is a hard requirement, the first box checked before experience is even considered.

Getting certified means passing the FAA aeronautical knowledge test, which covers airspace, weather, loading and performance, and operating rules, and then keeping current through the free online recurrent training every 24 months. With the certificate in hand, what separates candidates is flight time, familiarity with the payloads and processing software the job relies on, and experience with waivers for night, over-people or beyond visual line of sight operations. Defense and government roles often use the UAV and UAS job titles instead, and may accept military qualifications alongside or in place of Part 107.

Questions, answered

What is a Part 107 certificate?
It is the FAA remote pilot certificate with a small UAS rating, issued under 14 CFR Part 107. It lets you fly drones under 55 pounds for commercial purposes in the US, and you earn it by passing the FAA aeronautical knowledge test.
What jobs can I get with a Part 107 license?
Commercial drone pilot and operator roles in inspection, surveying and mapping, construction, agriculture, real estate and film, plus delivery operations, public safety programmes and field roles at drone manufacturers. Many technician and flight test jobs ask for it as well.
Is Part 107 enough to get hired as a drone pilot?
It is the entry ticket rather than the whole case. Employers also look for logged flight hours, experience with the sensors and software their work uses, and sometimes waivers for operations such as flying beyond visual line of sight.
How long does a Part 107 certificate last?
The certificate itself does not expire, but you have to complete the FAA recurrent training every 24 months to keep flying under it. The recurrent training is online and free.
